What is in the The Air we Breathe?

Purpose
To create a graph showing the composition of air.
Air contains:Fraction
(by volume)
Percentage
(by volume)
Nitrogen 0.78
Oxygen 0.21
Argon 0.009
Water
Other gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen and helium0.0003
Calculations
Calculate the percentage of each element in air.
Graph the Data
Prepare a bar graph.
  1. Plot the data on graph paper.
  2. Along the horizontal axis, make a column for each kind of atom or molecule found in air.
  3. Label the vertical axis with “Percentage of Air (by volume).” Choose the largest scale that will allow you to plot the value for nitrogen.
  4. Plot the points by drawing a horizontal line along each column at the height corresponding to its percentage of air.
